Nevada Congressional Election 2010 Political Courage Test

b) Should abortion be legal only within the first trimester of pregnancy?
c) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
d) Should abortion be legal when the life of the woman is endangered?
e) Should federal subsidies be prohibited from being used for abortion procedures?
Pro-life a) Do you consider yourself pro-choice or pro-life?
Oprah refers to Ah Hah moments. I believe when a sperm fertilizes an egg there is an Ah Hah moment. Without outside intervention, the result of that moment begins an individual with DNA that will result in a predetermined cycle of growing up and growing old and dying a natural death. This is not a religious view; it is a scientific view albeit remarkable.. By itself this would be considered Pro-life. if elected I will help bring about the dialogue that will change the culture in the United States and also help women around the world to escape their exploitation

4) Do you support requiring the federal budget to be balanced each year?
No 3) Do you support the elimination of the federal estate tax?
Yes 5) Do you support using government funds in an effort to stimulate and improve the economy?
I was an Eisenhower Republican before I was an anti-Bush war Democrat. After 24-years in the military, I know that increasing the military budget is a blind ambition of most officers I've met. I know that enlisted personnel are underpaid and contract personnel are overpaid by comparison. I know that careerism is ramped and Secretary Gates knows that there are needless layers of highly paid rank in redundant positions. I believe a healthy and an educated population are elements of military power and it is the government's obligation to ensure it happens. It's national defense.
3) I do not support the elimination of the federal estate tax except for small? family farms or not mega farms. Tax breaks do not create jobs unless that is a criterion of the benefit. In recent years corporations have pocketed the tax break gain, shipped jobs outside the U.S. and imported the manufactured goods at a 1 percent tariff. A balanced budget sounds good but does not account for contingencies. One example would be that a handful of bankers in the U.S. committed fraud on the world; caused the collapse of nations..
b) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
c) Do you support increasing the federal minimum wage?
d) Do you support the ability of workers to unionize?
e) Do you support federal funding for job-training programs that retrain displaced workers?
No a) Do you support privatizing elements of Social Security?
I support the Employee Free Choice Act. I consider this a Constitutional issue of free association. I do not support privatizing social security or reducing benefits. I support taking the cap of social security contributions. I think public/private partnerships are a conflict of interest and privatization usually costs more to society.i.e.prisons. I believe government (we) recognize human nature that includes greed, cowardice, criminality must be curtailed through laws and regulation especially banks and Wall Street. It all starts with a healthy, educated population that attracts business and combine for a good quality of life in a safe environment.
a) Do you support increasing the amount individuals are permitted to contribute to federal campaigns?
b) Should Congress regulate indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
c) Do you support removing all contribution limits on federal campaigns?
d) Should candidates for federal office be encouraged to meet voluntary spending limits?
e) Do you support giving the President the power of the line item veto for items concerning appropriations?
f) Do you support limiting the President's ability to define how legislation is applied through the use of signing statements?
I received the Ethics in Government Award for pursuing open government. I believe in public financing and do not believe private companies should be in control of our voting machines. The Fairness doctrine should be reinstated. Elections are expensive because candidates do not have access to our own airwaves and an entire industry that has built up around them. I'll give the President the line item veto power when the President gives back the power to declare war to Congress or Congress steps up to it's job. Public financing, equal access, a ban on advertising will make for better candidates.
b) Do you support programs that provide prison inmates with vocational and job-related training and job-placement assistance when released?
c) Do you support programs that provide prison inmates with substance abuse treatment?
d) Do you support reduced prison sentences for non-violent offenders?
e) Do you support mandatory prison sentences for selling illegal drugs?
No a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
When people or our children do wrong, we protect others then teach children how to be good citizens. If necessary, we provide necessities until they can provide honestly for themselves. Violence should never be tolerated. The punishment should always suit the crime and be equally applied given circumstances. If alcohol is legal and marijuana is equivalent then it should also be legal. This will free courts and prisons for violent offenders. I believe in justice and good judges. Mandatory sentences take away judgment. Instead, remove the judge if judgment is impaired. Education and health are requirements for a strong nation.
b) Do you support federal funding for universal pre-K programs?
c) Do you support federal funding for charter schools?
d) Do you support federal funding for K-12 school vouchers?
e) Do you support the federal government providing college students with financial aid?
Unknown Position a) Do you support federal education standards and testing requirements for K-12 students?
A healthy and an educated populations are elements of national power. I believe in local administration for most government especially education, however if we are to have a "common good" and "international trade" some educational standards are necessary and accountable. Our economy has fallen to a point that requires a two income household, so pre-K is necessary. What was considered a minimum education was a high school education. Now a master's degree is what a bachelor's degree was years ago. We need professional teacher not a babysitter. Education is necessary for good citizenship and quality of life in the U.S.
b) Do you support international emissions targets aimed at reducing the effects of climate change?
c) Do you support allowing energy producers to trade carbon credits under a "cap and trade" system?
d) Do you support strengthening fuel efficiency standards on all gasoline and diesel-powered engines, including cars, trucks, and sport utility vehicles?
e) Do you support domestic oil exploration in federally-protected areas?
f) Do you support federal funding for the development of alternative energy?
g) Do you support the development of nuclear reactors?
Unknown Position a) Do you support enacting environmental regulations aimed at reducing the effects of climate change?
I believe global warming is a real threat and would seriously look for environmental regulation and call it homeland security.
b) Do you believe that the Second Amendment guarantees the right of individual citizens to own guns?
c) Do you support allowing individuals to carry concealed guns?
d) Do you support a ban on assault rifles?
Yes a) Do you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
I believe law enforcement needs a path to find evidence in a crime committed with a weapon- guns or bullets. Yes, some criminal will get weapons anyway, but I believe most of them are stupid. With today's computerized manufacturing, there is no reason this could not be done easily through a data base. I believe handling a weapon requires training. I belonged to the National Guard (militia). My history gives me the right to own a weapon under the Constitution. That's for all of us to protect our country. Incidentally, I do have an expert marksman ribbon.
b) Do you support expanding access to health care through commercial health insurance reform?
c) Should the federal government expand eligibility for tax-free medical savings accounts?
d) Do you support monetary limits on damages that can be collected in malpractice lawsuits?
e) Do you support relaxing regulations on the importation of prescription drugs?
Yes a) Do you support a publicly-administered health insurance option?
A healthy population is an element of national power too. It is a defense issue. I believe in taking the age limit off Medicare. I do not understand why anyone would want to limit their access to the courts or limit the rightful outcome of a lawsuit. I also do not understand why the government should be restricted (by the pharmaceutical companies) to get the best price for prescription drugs for its citizens. This goes back to public financing of campaigns.
b) Do you support decreasing the number of legal immigrants allowed into the country?
c) Do you support establishing English as the official national language?
d) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
Unknown Position a) Do you support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants?
We have illegal immigrants and illegal employers. Over the years the federal government looked the other way so employers would have cheap labor that would not join a union or file a complaint. Fines for employers start at $200. Suggested fines for illegal persons are suggested to be $15,000. The employer could be a multi-billion dollar mega farmer and the illegal person could be a destitute father and husband providing for his family - Justice? NAFTA and the other trade agreements that favor business over labor instead of in partnership are causing more immigration because farmers can no longer
b) Do you support increasing military assistance for Afghanistan?
c) Do you support increasing economic development assistance for Afghanistan?
d) Should the United States continue to strike suspected terrorist targets in Pakistan?
e) Do you support granting aid to countries when it is in the security interests of the United States?
f) Should the United States support the creation of a Palestinian state?
g) Do you support increasing sanctions on Iran if it continues to defy United Nations mandates?
h) Do you support the withdrawal of United States troops from Iraq?
i) Do you support the United States' involvement in free trade agreements?
No a) Do you support United States military action in Afghanistan?
I supported going into Afghanistan after 9-11 but not anymore. I am retired military and spent most of my time in Intelligence. I did not believe the story going into Iraq at the time and am sure now it had nothing to do with "terrorism." A war on a term used for a strategy "terrorism" is a fantasy and there is no way to win such a war. The "Bush Doctrine" preemptive strike is or should be illegal. It is not a military role to do nation building. It's all about oil or now other resources in Afghanistan. Educate people.
b) Do you support allowing openly-gay men and women to serve in the United States military?
c) Do you support federal funding for embryonic stem cell research?
d) Should the federal government end affirmative action programs?
No a) Should marriage only be between one man and one woman?
I always supported civil union but now I support marriage for same sex couples. Biology and I have been enlightened over the years. The United States military should base service on the ability to do the job, not on sex, race, or sexual orientation. When employment does not include hiring your fishing buddy or your brother-in-law then you can do away affirmative action. I always tell the story of how orchestras were all white males until they did auditions behind a screen and the choice was based on the music. Medical research should be done with restraint.
We must get control of international, mega corporations that I believe are controlling our government. A Constitutional Amendment clarifying to the Supreme Court that "We the People" means natural persons and not corporations is one step. Public financing of campaigns and access to our airways is also part of that control as is the deficit. The deficit must be addressed by setting a tax structure that is progressive and not leave it up to the poor and middle class to support corporate wealth. We need to seriously support renewable energy just like we did the space program.
